By Fatih Karimov - Trend: ISIL (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) was formed to provide security for Israel, the Iranian Armed Forces Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri said.
"Whatever we look at the issue, we see the US support for the ISIL terrorist group. They do so in order to protect Israel from threats in the region," Iran's Fars news agency quoted Jazayeri as saying Oct. 16.
Jazayeri referred to Syria as one of the most important links of the resistance front chain, adding that curbing Hezbollah in Lebanon, putting pressure on the new resistance front in Iraq, and finally putting pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran were other objectives of the US.
"All imperial powers attempted over the past four years to topple the Syrian government. Under support of Iran, not only the Syrian government was not toppled, but also it gained new victories," Jazayeri said.
Iran has recently proposed an updated peace plan for Syria.
The plan is focused on people's role, prevention of a power vacuum in Syria, fight against terrorism, aid delivery to the displaced, and dispatch of humanitarian aid to the Syrian people, according to the Iranian officials.
Tehran has always expressed support for the government of the Syrian President Bashar Assad. The Islamic Republic views the Syrian regime as its main strategic ally in the region and as a part of an "axis of resistance" against Israel.
Western countries accuse Iran of running military operations in Syria, but Tehran denies the accusations. Iranian officials have repeatedly stressed that they only provide military consultation to the Syrian forces.
