The chairman of Iran's Assembly of Experts, Ayatollah Mohammad Reza Mahdavi Kani has died after being a long time in coma in a hospital in Tehran, Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported Oct. 21.

The chairman of Iran's Assembly of Experts, Ayatollah Mohammad Reza Mahdavi Kani has died after being a long time in coma in a hospital in Tehran, Iran's official IRNA news agency reported Oct. 21.

The 83-year-old conservative politician was hospitalized after suffering a heart attack on June 4.
Mahdavi Kani was in coma and his health condition remained critical in last months.

He took up several senior posts after the 1978 revolution.

Mahdavi Kani who was a close ally of the past Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Rouhollah Khomenini served as a member of the Constitutional Amendment Council of Iran to review and amend the country's Constitution in 1989.

He was elected as chairman of the Assembly of Experts in March 2011 after Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani resigned from office.

The Assembly of Experts is a deliberative body of Mujtahids (Islamic theologians) which is tasked with appointing and removing Iran's supreme leader and supervising his activities.
