Some $20B of goods smuggled into Iran

Some $20 billion of goods are smuggled into Iran, Iran Customs Administration director Masoud Karbasian said.

He said custom offices should support legal trade and do not let the end prices of goods increase, Iran's Mehr news agency reported on October 21.

Based on the Customs Administration annual report, Iran imported $50.818 billion of goods in the past year. So, the volume of illegal imports is almost 28 percent of the country's total imports.

Meanwhile, Habibollah Haghighati, the director of Iran's headquarters against smuggling and currency trafficking, said the implementation of a project to systematize custom procedures has led to a considerable decline in the volume of smuggled goods in the first half of the current year.

The current Iranian year began on March 21.

Iran's total non-oil trade hit $49.69 billion in the first half of the current Iranian calendar year, a 44 percent rise compared to the same period in the previous year.

Iran exported $23.66 billion of non-oil products (including the gas condensate) and imported $26.21 billion of non-oil products during the six-month period.
