Iranian taekwondo fighter Kimia Alizadeh Zenoorin has just earned her country’s first-ever Olympic women’s medal.

Zenoorin made history by reaping bronze in the 57-kg class of taekwondo, registering for herself the position of the first Iranian woman to win a medal in an Olympic event, IRIB news agency reported Aug. 18.

The Iranian sportswoman defeated Sweden’s Nikita Glasnovic to win the historic medal.

“I am so happy for Iranian girls because it is the first medal, and I hope at the next Olympics we will get gold,” said Zenoorin.

She has been an ace in Iran’s sleeve since 2014 when she won gold in the women’s 63-kg class at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games.

Zenoorin also beat the London 2012 gold medalist Jade Jones at the 2015 World Championship and won a bronze medal.

Her victory comes despite the fact that many Iranian athletes – even in wrestling and weightlifting about which they were hopeful most – have failed to gain a place among the top three in the current Olympic games.
