The US military said Monday that the Afghan government has ordered the release of 37 of 88 prisoners considered "dangerous" by Washington, dpa reported.

The government of President Hamid Karzai said earlier this month that there was no evidence to show that 72 of the prisoners were wrongdoers. A government-appointed panel announced they would be freed soon.

The prisoners are held in Bagram prison, some 60 kilometres north of Kabul, which the US handed over to the Afghan government in March.

"Of the 88 detainees under dispute, 40 per cent have participated in direct attacks wounding or killing 57 Afghan citizens and security force members," the US military said.

"Thirty per cent participated in directs wounding or killing 60 US or coalition force members."

Afghan officials were unreachable for comment.

The US military also accused the Afghan Review Body of releasing the prisoners without referral to an investigating agency or the Afghan justice system, "despite the fact that the US has disputed their cases."

More than 3,000 people believed to be Taliban fighters or linked to them are kept in Bagram jail, which Afghan President Karzai in a recent speech called a "Taliban-producing factory."

Karzai said innocent people were taken to the prison and joined the insurgency due to torture and insults.
