Social, cultural and political problems emerge from economic corruption, ISNA quoted Iran's Vice President Mohammad Shariatmadari as saying on January 8.

According to global statistics, Iran ranks 144 among 177 countries in terms of Corruption Perceptions Index, he said.

The country's status has declined by 56 places in the past eight years, he added. Just 31 countries which are very poor and are grappling with internal wars are below Iran in the ranking. This issue shows that the situation is serious in the country, he said.
He said that the administration is determined to combat financial abuse which fuels unemployment and social woes in the country.
The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) ranks countries and territories based on how corrupt their public sector is perceived to be. It is a composite index involving a combination of polls drawing on corruption-related data collected by a variety of reputable institutions. The CPI reflects the views of observers from around the world including experts living and working in the countries and territories evaluated.
