Agriculture in Azerbaijan (January-November 2014)

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree about additional support for providing agricultural producers with agricultural machinery and ensuring livestock development in November.

According to the decree, eight million AZN envisaged in the state budget for 2014 will be allocated from the president's reserve fund to Agroleasing OJSC to provide the agricultural producers with agricultural machinery. Around 10 million AZN will be allocated to import the breeding animals and sell through the lease programs with a 50 percent discount to livestock farms.

The Ministry of Finance was charged to ensure financing envisaged by the order.

The agricultural output at current prices amounted to 4.932 billion AZN in Azerbaijan in January-November, decreasing by 2.9 percent compared to the same period of 2013, according to the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee's report as of 11 months.

According to the report, livestock production increased by 3 percent, crop production decreased by 8.1 percent for the period.

As of December 1, 2014, the crop was gathered on a 1.198 million hectare area in Azerbaijan.

Around 992,000 hectares of the total sown area accounted for grain and legumes (99.1 percent of a total sown area under these crops), 1,100 hectares - tobacco, 22,900 hectares - cotton, 61,700 hectares - potatoes, 76,000 hectares - vegetables, 28,000 hectares - melons, 5,700 hectares - sugar beet (87.1 percent), 11,700 hectares - sunflower forage.

In particular, during the reporting period, around 2.379 million metric tons of grain were produced in the country. On average, around 24 quintals of grain were gathered per hectare.

Around 1.181 million metric tons of vegetables, namely, 819,300 metric tons of potatoes, 440,900 metric tons of melons, 844,600 metric tons of fruits and berries, 147,600 metric tons of grapes, 166,400 metric tons of sugar beet, 459.2 metric tons of tea were produced in the farms during this period.

Potato production increased by 17.5 percent, melons - 2.6 percent, vegetables - by 1.9 percent, fruit and berries - 0.58 percent, grape - 0.4 percent, tea declined by 19.08 percent compared to the same period of 2013.

The country produced 421,100 metric tons of meat (live weight), 1.705 million metric tons of milk, 1.425 billion eggs, 16.6 metric tons of wool during the reporting period.

Meat production increased by 1.5 percent, milk - by 3.5 percent, eggs - by 11.4 percent, wool - 1.7 percent in January-November 2014 compared to the same period of 2013.
