Situation with the Strait of Hormuz was discussed today during the meeting between Russian Deputy FM Sergei Ryabkov and U.S. Charge d'Affaires Sheila Gwaltney, Itar Tass reported quoting Russian Foreign Ministry.

The meeting took place upon the request of the U.S. side.

The situation with the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear program were discussed during the meeting, the ministry reported.

The West alleges that Iran is pursuing nuclear bombs through its nuclear program, which Tehran insists is for peaceful purpose only.

Aside from the abovementioned issues, other bilateral questions were discussed as well, the ministry noted.

The United States and its European allies are considering expanded sanctions against Iran to cover its oil exports, prompting the latter to threaten in late December to close the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical oil routes.

Almost 17 million barrels per day of oil - almost 20 percent of all the oil traded worldwide-went through that strait in 2011, according to the federal Energy Information Administration.
