On Monday, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan met with the new president of Iran Hassan Rouhani in Tehran, Mediamax reported.
According to the press service of the Armenian President, the heads of the two countries discussed a wide range of issues, both bilateral and multilateral.
The two sides stressed that the agenda of the Armenian-Iranian relations is a testament to implementation of a number major projects. Serzh Sargsyan and Hassan Rouhani emphasized the need to raise the traditional cooperation to a new higher stage.
The sides also touched upon regional issues, in particular, to the current phase of the negotiations over settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.
Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the seven surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
