One Syrian protester has been killed after a demonstration by hundreds of students turned violent at Damascus University, Press TV reported.

The incident happened inside the campus of Damascus University on Monday, activists told the Associated Press.

Head of Syria's National Organization for Human Rights Ammar Qurabi said the student was shot dead.

However, Ausama Monajed, a London-based political activist, said the student was beaten to death.

On Sunday, several Syrian people, including nine security forces, were killed when a convoy of security forces was ambushed by "an armed group" near the northwestern coastal town of Banias, Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported.

Anti-government protests demanding reform have been held in several Syrian cities over the past weeks. Scores of people have been killed during the protests.

Authorities have denied allegations that security forces are responsible for the death of protesters.

They blame the violence on armed groups, saying security forces have been given clear instructions not to hurt civilians.

Damascus says the protests and the ensuing violence are organized by foreign sources and aim to destabilize the country.
