UN officials arrive in Yemen to inspect human rights situation

A delegation of the UN commission on human rights arrived in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa on Tuesday to assess the situation here after nearly five months of political unrest, the official Saba news agency reported.

"A three-member delegation of the UN commission arrived in Sanaa Tuesday for a ten-day visit to assess the human rights situation in the country in light of recent events," the report said.

During the visit, the commission will meet with justice and security officials, opposition leaders, representatives of human rights and civil society organizations, victims' families and eyewitnesses, according to Saba, Xinhua reported.

The continuing protests demanding oust President Ali Abdullah Saleh rattled Yemen since February, triggering clashes between Saleh's supporters and anti-government protestors across the country's major cities, including Sanaa and killing hundreds of people.

Escalating unrest also forced tens of thousands of Yemenis to flee to remote villages or other countries.
