Syrian civilians on Monday fled parts of the capital Damascus, due to heavy shelling targeting areas on the outskirts, activists said, dpa reported.

Activist posted online pictures that showed small vans loaded with people and their belongings leaving the Damascus suburb of Douma, a rebel bastion which has been shelled by government forces since last week.

In the central province of Homs, shelling continued Monday for the third week in the regions of Khalidiyeh and Deir Baalaba, killing one person and wounding 12, activist Omar Homsi told dpa.

After a day of heavy shelling in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour, activists described the situation as "catastrophic."

The opposition Local Coordination Committees, which document violence across Syria, said Sunday's death toll reached 90 people, most of whom were from Deir al-Zour.

News from Syria cannot be independently verified, as the government has barred most foreign media from restive areas since the uprising started in March 2011.

Meanwhile, the downing of a Turkish plane by Syria last week continued to sour relations between the two countries. The search continued for the two missing Turkish pilots. NATO is scheduled to meet on Tuesday to discuss the incident.

Syria has acknowledged shooting down the F-4 phantom jet after it violated its airspace, but insists it only identified it as a Turkish fighter after the shooting took place.
