Israeli military aircraft fired a missile at a motorbike in the north-west Gaza Strip Tuesday, killing a Palestinian militant, witnesses and medical official said, dpa reported.

The Israeli military confirmed it had carried out an attack, but gave no further details.

Three other people were wounded in the strike, Ashraf al-Qedra, spokesman of the Hamas-run Health Ministry told reporters.

The precise identity of the man could not be immediately confirmed. Israeli media identified him as Hitham Mashal, a rocket manufacturing expert and a member of a global jihadist group responsible for launching rockets at the Israeli city of Eilat earlier this month.

Jihadist groups in the Strip are also believed to be responsible for sporadic rocket fire from the Gaza Strip aimed at southern Israel in recent days.

The attack is Israel's first targeted killing in the Gaza Strip since the eight-day Israeli offensive against Gaza militias in November.

It comes after an incident earlier in the day in which a Palestinian killed an Israelis at a hitchhiking station in the northern West Bank, police and first aid officials said.

It was unclear from initial announcements whether the assailant grabbed the victim's gun and then shot him, or whether he had stabbed him.

Border police at the site shot and wounded the suspect, police said.

The victim was pronounced dead shortly after the attack.
