A magnitude 5.1 earthquake on Sunday hit an area of northern Italy that has been struck by two devastating earthquakes since May 20, DPA reported.

There were no immediate reports of injuries but witnesses said masonry had fallen off several buildings damaged in the previous quakes.

Sunday's tremor took place at around 9:20 pm (1920 GMT) and its epicentre was located near the towns of Concordia and San Possidonio in the region of Emilia Romagna.

It was "probably part of a wave of aftershocks," that have hit the region following Tuesday's magnitude 5.9 tremor, Claudio Chiarabba, from the National Instute of Geophysics and Vulcanology told the television news channel, Sky TG 24.

Tuesday's quake claimed 17 lives and injured more than 350 people. A magnitude 6 earthquake that struck the area on May 20 killed seven people.
