Turkey to prosecute drug traffickers as terrorists

Turkey's Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that drug traffickers will be prosecuted as terrorists in the country, TRT Haber news channel reported Sept. 26.

Davutoglu made the remarks at a congress of the country's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

He said Turkey has always fought against drugs, and will further strengthen this fight.

The minimum age of drug addicts in Turkey is 13, the maximum being 65, according to Turkish Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (TUBIM).

TUBIM stats show that 2.9 percent of drug addicts among the Turkish citizens are aged 15-24, 2.8 percent - 25-44, and 2.3 percent - 45-64.

In 2013, some 5,214 people were treated in Turkey for drug addiction. There are 22 drug treatment centers for drug addiction in the country.

In the last four years, some 316,466 people were arrested in Istanbul for the use and sale of drugs. In recent years, Turkey has tightened the fight against drug addiction.
