By Huseyn Valiyev - Trend:

The penetration rate of fixed broadband Internet in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku has reached 85 percent, Baku Telephone Communications production association (PA) of Azerbaijani Communications and Information Technologies Ministry told Trend.

The production association said that in late 2013 the growth of internet penetration in the Azerbaijani capital stood at 70 percent.

As of January 1, 2014, the total number of connections reached 260,000 taking into account the private service providers' ports, according to the production association. Some 160,000 of these connections are the users of the state provider BakinterNet.

In early 2013 these figure was 250,000 and 90,000 respectively.

Number of the broadband ADSL ports in the network state operator increased by 70.7 percent. The ports have been deployed in the telecommunications centres of the operator in Baku and townships of the capital.

Aside from that the production association has prepared a development project of optical access to the Internet and submitted it to the Communications and Information Technologies Ministry. This includes the possibility of providing the end users with access to the internet via fibre optic lines using Fibre to the Home (FTTH) technology.

FTTH promises an abundance of volume and a data transmission rate constituting tens of megabits which can be distributed among home users.

The access speed of FTTH will vary from 10 to 100 megabits per second.
