BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. We urge countries to set methane emission reduction targets in the organic waste sector as part of their national plans, COP29 President, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev said at the COP29 summit on methane and non-CO2 greenhouse gases, Trend reports.
“Since the global methane initiative was launched, methane emissions have continued to rise. We are moving in the wrong direction. To reduce emissions, we need to develop and implement detailed and achievable plans. The NDC provides us with an important opportunity to do just that. To achieve our global goals, we must address all major sources of methane emissions: fossil fuels, agriculture, and organic waste. Both governments and the private sector have a responsibility to act. Last year at COP28, we saw significant progress on methane from fossil fuels. More than 50 companies, including SOCAR, signed the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter, committing to reduce methane emissions to almost zero,” he said.
Babayev indicated that we concentrated on mitigating methane emissions from organic waste that year.
“This is a burgeoning problem that requires urgent action. Food waste accounts for up to 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions in 2022. This has significant costs to economies, human health, and the environment. We urge countries to set targets to reduce methane emissions from the organic waste sector as part of their national plans,” he emphasized.
