BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 13. The COP29 is an additional opportunity now to strengthen efforts for implementation pursuant to the Paris Agreement, the Prime Minister of Egypt Mostafa Kamal Madbouly said as he delivered his statement during the COP29 summit in Baku, Trend reports.
"This conference therefore behoves us to guarantee funding for the developing countries. Because when it comes to the African continent, we see that some of 5 percent of its GDP is taken up by dealing with climate change. I am confident that we will achieve positive and constructive results at the end of this conference," he said.
According to him, the holding of this conference is marked by grave events that are deeply troubling and major challenges that have led to loss of life and which pose huge difficulties. Egypt calls for concentration on implementation in dealing with the climate crisis and catching up the delays in dispensing finance for loss and damage, especially countries that are deprived of technology and knowledge and who need capacity development in order to avoid loss of human life.
"Egypt has unstintingly called for strengthening the principles of solidarity, consensus, and negotiation that take into account the differences among countries and disparities as recalled in the Paris Agreement. Egypt seeks to ensure that there is an overall national process that takes into account environmental aspects. And we've launched a strategic initiative for 2030 and green transformation projects, as well as projects based on strengthening partnerships for producing renewable sources, so that by 2030 it amounts to 48 percent," the prime minister noted.
He also added that the African countries in general are suffering from a dearth of funding and are dealing with real problems in implementation. And they are called upon to take emergency measures that do not take into account disparities in terms of capacity.
"And we stress the need for us to have quantitative and qualitative goals. And the main goal must be met first and foremost by the developed countries. Cursory loans should be replaced by contingency funding. We need to take into account the real conditions for dealing with climate change in the countries. There is also a need to tackle the shortage of funding when it comes to implementation. Egypt wishes the Azerbaijani presidency every success, and we are confident we will meet our expected aspirations," he stressed.
