BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 13. I have been to several COPs, and the current large-scale event in Baku is of particular significance, the representative of the US Climate Action Network, Mindahi Cressencio Bastida Muñoz from Mexico told Trend.
“The current UN climate conference is addressing a very important issue for humanity that depends on funding. We have to be more careful to pay back nature. Because nature is what sustains us. So I think the Baku conference should be an important step forward in rethinking our place in the world as human beings. Governments, corporations, and everyone around us are involved in this problem because it's a big problem, the result of which is climate change. So we have to be here and rethink our place in the modern world. And Azerbaijan should be the leading country to rethink our energy capabilities and the way we support this world. We have to respect each other. We must respect nature. We must respect ourselves. We need a new state policy on renewable energy sources,” he said.
To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will run until November 22, opened on November 11 at the Baku Olympic Stadium.
The event is the largest organized by Azerbaijan to date and is the first time the region has hosted the event in Azerbaijan. Within COP29, the highest-level event - the summit of world leaders on climate action - will be held on November 12–13.
The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate finance. The COP29 chairmanship has launched 14 initiatives that include linkages between climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals, including green energy corridors, green energy storage, harmony for climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction in organic waste, action on green digital technologies, and other topics.
