BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. Climate change very negatively impacts small countries, Team Lead for Climate Analytics support to the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) Rueanna Haynes said at a joint panel session of the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company and Rhenus, the official logistics partner of COP29, in Baku today, Trend reports.
According to her, the income levels of individuals in the Caribbean region are comparatively lower when benchmarked against those in emerging economies.
She indicated that obtaining a loan is challenging for them.
"Caribbean countries are not the ones who cause climate change; yet, they are affected by it. They get credits for adjusting to change, yet they require funding to keep afloat," she added
To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will run until November 22, opened on November 11 at the Baku Olympic Stadium.
The event is Azerbaijan's largest to date, and it is the region's first time hosting it in Azerbaijan. The highest-level event at COP29, the global leaders' summit on climate action, will take place on November 12-13.
The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate finance. The COP29 chairmanship has launched 14 initiatives that include linkages between climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals, including green energy corridors, green energy storage, harmony for climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction in organic waste, action on green digital technologies, and other topics.
