BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 13. Italy is at the forefront of nuclear fusion, said Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni as she delivered her national statement at the COP29 summit in Baku, Trend reports.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for united action to cap global warming within 1.5 degrees, thanking Azerbaijan for hosting the event. Highlighting targets set in Dubai, Meloni emphasized the need to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030, with a focus on collaboration among major greenhouse gas emitters.

Italy, she noted, is committed to doing its part, allocating over 4 billion euros of its climate fund to African initiatives and supporting both the Green Climate Fund and the Loss and Damage Fund.

Meloni stressed that a balanced energy mix is essential for a successful transition, emphasizing technology neutrality. "There is no single alternative to fossil fuels," she stated, supporting a diversified approach that includes renewables, biofuels, hydrogen, and nuclear fusion.

"Italy is at the forefront of nuclear fusion. In the framework of our G7 presidency, we organized the first meeting of the World Fusion Energy Group, sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency. We intend to relaunch this technology, which could be a game changer, as it can turn energy from a geopolitical weapon into a widely accessible resource," Meloni pointed out.

Meloni also underscored Italy’s commitment to global cooperation, spotlighting the climate-energy nexus in Italy’s "Matei Plan for Africa" and initiatives like the Adaptation Accelerator app for vulnerable nations. She urged for enhanced energy diplomacy to foster partnerships between the global North and South, reinforcing the idea that shared destinies offer mutual opportunities for sustainable growth.
