BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 13. I believe that our negotiators will reach an agreement on financial assistance for developing countries, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković told reporters at COP29, Trend reports.
"We are very happy to be in Baku, Azerbaijan. This is my second visit in the last 12 months. I am convinced that Azerbaijan plays an important role as a bridge between more developed and less developed countries. Its geographical location, energy resources, and reserves ensure its significant place on the world map," said Plenković.
He mentioned that Croatia is looking to up the ante by boosting the share of renewable energy sources from 29 percent to 42 percent by 2030.
"I am convinced that our negotiators, who will remain here during the negotiations, will reach an agreement on the resumption of financial sources to help developing countries.
We believe that it is necessary to take into account the new global realities and the special needs of all countries that have their own priorities in industrial development. Global efforts are needed; otherwise, we will face the fact that our children and grandchildren will experience difficulties related to climate change and extreme weather events in the coming decades," the Prime Minister stressed.
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) started in Baku on November 11. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system.
The abbreviation COP (Conference of Parties) in English means "Conference of the Parties." It is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties decide otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
