Azerbaijani Opposition Leader May Participate in Presidential Elections

Azerbaijan, Baku, 9 June / Trend corr. E.Babayev / Etibar Mammadov, Leader of the opposition Azerbaijani National Independent Party (ANIP), did not exclude the possibility of participating in the upcoming presidential elections. "If the party will take a decision to participate in the elections and will nominate my candidature, then I will submit the decision," Mammadov told to TrndNews.

The presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held in October 2008.

The Azadlig bloc, that unites three opposition parties - Popular Front, Citizen and Development and Liberal, has stated that the bloc would boycott the upcoming presidential elections. Isa Gambar- leader of Musavat party, Sardar Jalaloglu-chairman of Democratic party and Mais Gulmammadov- Chairman of Green party of Azerbaijan, have already nominated their candidature to the presidential post. On 5 May, Eldar Namazov, Head of the Public forum 'For Azerbaijan, stated that he would also nominated his candidature to the presidential post. The candidature of Ilham Aliyev will be nominated from the ruling New Azerbaijan party.

Ali Orujev, the Deputy Chairman of ANIP, told to Trend that most members of the party support Mammadov's candidature. "The leader of the party can reach serious results if he will participate in the elections," Orujev said.

ANIP was the first party that received registration in Azerbaijan in 1992. Etibar Mammadov had been the founder and chairman of the party since 2004. At present, Mammadov is the deputy chairman of the International Democratic Alliance.
