The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will visit Iran in 2012, IRNA state news agency quotes the Iranian Parliamentary Human Rights Committee chairman Zohra Ilahiyan as saying.

Ilahiyan said representatives of the Iranian Parliamentary Human Rights Committee visited New York, met with the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and invited him to visit Iran.

"The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay will visit Iran in April 2012. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon promised to visit Iran after Pillay's visit and closely get acquainted with human rights situation in Iran," Ilahiyan said.

She also said prospects of the parliamentary committee's cooperation with the UN on human rights were also discussed.

The UN appointed Ahmed Shahid as special envoy on human rights in Iran in June 2011.

Shahid was supposed to visit Iran and prepare a report regarding the situation with human rights, political and other prisoners in the country. Iranian officials did not permit him to visit the country. However, Shahid made public his report regarding the human rights situation in Iran. Iranian officials protested the report.
