About 20 Iranian citizens, serving their sentence in Azerbaijan, will be extradited in early Mar, Zafar Gafarov

Around 20 Iranian citizens, serving their sentence in Azerbaijan, will be extradited in early March, Trend reports quoting Zafar Gafarov, the head of the International Legal Cooperation Department of the Azerbaijani Justice Minsitry.

According to Gafarov, both Iran and Azerbaijan are members of the CE Convention, adopted on extradition of citizens in 1983. In accordance with the Convention, the Iranian Justice Minsitry submitted petition to the Azerbaijani Ministry on serving the rest sentence of 20 prisoners in the motherland. Under the petition, extradition of prisoners was coordinated between the two countries.

According to Gafarov, Azerbaijan took numerous measures on international legal cooperation and conluded some agreements on rendering legal aid in different countries. Iran is also among these countries. Azerbaijan and Iran carry out extradiction of prisoners twice in a year.

Gafarov reported that the Justice Ministry received over 250 appeals from different countries in this regard. A part of them has been solved, the rest is under consideration. At present there are around 380 foreign prisoners serving their sentence in Azerbaijan.
