Azerbaijan to Present Report on Ecological Protection of the Caspian

Azerbaijan, Baku, 18 February / corr Trend E.Huseynli / Azerbaijan and Russia will produce and submit to each other a report on the ecological protection of the Caspian.

"75% of pollution of the Azerbaijani section of the Caspian is caused by waste thrown into the Volga River," Huseyngulu Bagirov, the Azerbaijani Minister for Ecology and Natural Resources, said on 18 February.

The Caspian littoral countries - Azerbaijan, Russia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Iran - have joined international conventions on ecological protection of the Caspian. Azerbaijan installed four water treatment rigs to purify polluted water thrown into the Caspian. Initially there were plans to build ten similar rigs.

Bagirov said that the pollution of the Caspian with oil was a result of Russia's economic interest. "If Russia is an heir to the former USSR, it should have been the first interested in the treatment of the polluted Caspian during that period," the minister said.

According to Bagirov, 90% of oil products produced in Azerbaijan are in coastal areas of the Volga River. The Minister said that the report to be submitted to Russia will reflect these facts.
