Construction of Nuclear Reactor in Azerbaijan will be Discussed Again in IAEA

Azerbaijan, Baku, 21 April / corr. Trend E. Huseyinli/ The construction of the first nuclear reactor in Azerbaijan will be discussed in the Head Office of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of the United Nations in Vienna on 28 April, Adil Garibov, the director of Radiation Problems Institute of Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan said to Trend on 21 April.

The Azerbaijani government gave the go-ahead to the construction of the first nuclear reactor in Azerbaijan. Its construction is expected to be launched by 2009 and completed by 2010. The reactor will have a capacity of 30-35 megawatt.

In December 2007, the construction of the first nuclear reactor was discussed in IAEA.

According to Garibov, five representatives from Azerbaijan will take part in IAEA discussions. The Azerbaijani delegation includes specialists from Radiation Problems Institute of Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan and Ministry of Emergency Situations. The capacity of the reactor, its shape and the volume of allocated resources will also be discussed.

The Green Party of Azerbaijan opposes the construction of the reactor saying that nuclear technology harms human health and seriously damages ecology. According to the Green Party, Azerbaijan should take advantage of alternative sources of energy such as wind, water and sun.

The discussions in IAEA will end on 30 April.
