Uzbekistan expects to sign contracts on cotton-fiber exports for $500 million at the Sixth International Uzbek Cotton Fair opened in Tashkent on Oct.13, 2010, the Uzbek Foreign Economic Relations Ministry reported.

The International Uzbek Cotton Fair is organized by the Uzbek government with the assistance of the International Cotton Advisory Committee. The first such fair was held in October 2005.

About 300 companies and over 500 foreign partners from 34 countries confirmed their participation at the fair. Over 600,000 tons of cotton-fiber will put for sale at the fair.

During two days, Uzbekistan will provide opportunity to leaders of cotton industry, textile enterprises and trade agents to familiarize with strategy of cotton industry development, participate in fair and exchange trades, as well as sign direct cotton-fiber supplies.

Participants will have opportunity to get acquainted with thousand examples of the Uzbek cotton-fiber, which will be placed at UzExpoCenter. They could also familiarize with cotton quality and sign contracts on selected party and discuss transportation routes.

Uzbekistan ranks sixth in the world for cotton production and third for cotton-fiber exports. The country produces about 3.5 million tons of raw cotton annually and 1.0-1.2 million tons of cotton-fiber.

According to the official statistics, Uzbekistan reduced the cotton fiber production by 10.1 percent to 1.055 million tons in 2009 compared to the previous year. Textile enterprises increased cotton yarn production by 0.7 percent to 145.54 tons last year.

Uzbekistan signed contracts on export of 950,000 cotton-fibers at the Fifth International Uzbek Cotton Fair opened in Tashkent on Oct.13-14, 2009.
