Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, Aug.11 / Trend, H. Hasanov /
Winter wheat sowing has started in Turkmenistan's northern regions, the Turkmen Dovlet khabarlary state news service reported on Thursday.
The area under cereals in Turkmenistan hit 860,000 hectares.
The start date of sowing was approved by the Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov, according to which the current important agricultural campaign started in Dashoguz region.
The cowing campaign will start in Akhal, Balkan, Lebap and Mary on Aug.17.
Various models of foreign electric tractor will be utilized.
Despite the arid weather conditions, Turkmenistan harvested 1.3 million tons of wheat in 2011. This is enough to cover domestic demand and to seed next year's crop.
In previous years, Turkmenistan had to import almost all food grains.
