Official: Tehran-Kabul trade fourfold in four years

The value of trade between Iran and Afghanistan stood at $2.18 billion in the past Iranian calendar year, which ended on March 19, 2012, some fourfold of the figure for the year ended to March 2008, an official with Afghanistan's consulate general in the Iranian city of Mashhad stated.

The official predicted that the bilateral trade would exceed $3 billion in the current year, the IRIB reported.

According to statistics, Iran accounts for 35-40 percent of exports to Afghanistan, the official noted.

Iran mainly exports pharmaceuticals, cement, iron and steel products, detergents and gasoline to Afghanistan.

Afghan Ambassador to Tehran Abidollah Abid said in March that annual trade between Tehran and Kabul could reach $6 billion.
