Iran imports tea worth $300M annually

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 26

Some 65,000-70,000 tons of tea worth more than $300 million is annually imported by Iran, chairman of the Iranian Association of Tea Hamid Reza Movassaghi said.

“Iran mainly imports tea from Sri Lanka, India and Kenya,” Movassaghi added, Trend reports referring to IRNA.

The chairman added that Iran produces 25,000 tons of tea a year.

"Some 13,000 tons are consumed in Iran and the rest part is exported to other countries," Movassaghi said.

“Tea was imported in accordance with the exchange rate ($1 - 42,000 rials) till May 22,” the chairman added. “But afterwards, tea is imported at the rate set via the NIMA system.”

"Presently, the price of Iranian tea is $1.2 per kilogram, Ceylon tea is $5.5 per kilogram and Indian tea is $5 per kilogram in the world market," Movassaghi said.

The 17th International Tea Exhibition kicked off in Tehran, Iran and will continue tomorrow.

Some 30 companies are participating in the exhibition, 25 of them are local companies and five companies from Sri Lanka, India, Kenya and China.
