Iran compensating for its decline in exports to Iraq

TEHRAN, Iran, June. 9

Trend:

Member of Iran-Iraq Chamber of Commerce Hamid Hosseini said that the situation with Iran's exports to Iraq has improved in May compared to April, so the decrease in exports was compensated, Trend reports via Fars News Agency.

“The latest published statistics of the country's foreign trade indicate that the situation of exports in May was better than in April” Hosseini said.

He added that considering the export statistics, Iraq is still in the second place of export-target countries of Iran.

Noting that Iraq's borders are reopening, he said that according to the latest information, 50 Iraqi trucks have entered Iran and unloaded the cargoes at Mehran Customs.

Hosseini said that the border of Shalamcheh and the remaining borders will be opened soon. Iraq has closed its land borders with Iran amid the outbreak of the coronavirus. That is to say the border crossings of Shalamcheh, Chazzabeh, Mehran and Khosravi remain closed for commercial exchanges.

Mehran border crossing was closed in early March due to coronavirus outbreak. Iranian officials were continuously talking to Iraqi counterparts to reopen the crossing under health protocols.

Mehran is a major border between Iran and Iraq, and is among the most significant crossings, especially due to its proximity to holy cities in Iraq. Between 500,000 and 600,000 people cross the border at this terminal every year.
