Azerbaijan, baku / Trend corr.U.Ismaylova / Eyub Huseynov, the head of Azerbaijan Union of Free Consumers, has stated that 90% of the vegetable oil in the Azerbaijani consumers market is a genetically modified product.
According to Huseynov, the Union has already appealed to the European commission to hold monitoring at the Azerbaijani consumer market of genetically modified object (GMO).
Europe does not allow the import of GMO." No measures have been taken in Azerbaijan to prevent importing of such products into the country," Huseynov added. Genetically modified organisms are manufactured by methods of genetic engineering.
The use of genetically modified organisms in food holds a great risk and ecologists are careful not to spread genetically changed forms in nature, which could lead to catastrophic results.
