EU Ambassador: Azerbaijan-Turkey gas deal very important step

Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov.2 / Trend, A.Badalova /

It is a great performance of Azerbaijan and Turkey to reach a deal, European Union Ambassador to Azerbaijan Roland Kobia told journalists at a meeting of members of the Caspian-European Integration Business Club (CEIBC) with extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassadors of the EU and the Caspian-Black Sea region countries in Baku on Wednesday.

"I want to congratulate Azerbaijan on the deal with Turkey on the gas issues. I think this is very important step," he said.

According to Kobia, the deal will also be important in the broad framework of the energy cooperation between Azerbaijan and the EU, because linking the Caspian energy resources and enabling these resources to flow into Turkey is very important step.

"We very much welcome this step," he added.

In late October, Azerbaijan and Turkey signed a package of gas contracts which includes cost issues of Azerbaijani gas for Turkey in the Shah Deniz-2 project, volume of gas supplies to Turkey from the field after 2017, as well as a transit agreement for Azerbaijani gas transportation through Turkey.

Reserves of the Shah Deniz field are estimated at 1.2 trillion cubic meters of gas.

Gas, produced from the field, is considered as the main source for the projects of the Southern Gas Corridor. Azerbaijan plans to supply 10 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe from 2017 within the Shah Deniz 2 project.
