Garadagh district of Baku is proposed to be used for development of renewable energy sources. This was stated by the Director of Design Institute Bakıdovletlayihe under the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture of Azerbaijan Ilgar Isbatov during public discussions on the development plan of Greater Baku.

"It concerns the uninhabited territories of Garadagh region," Isbatov said.

By 2020, the share of alternative energy sources in total consumption in Azerbaijan will be increased to 9.7 per cent compared to the current 2.3 per cent. Increasing the share of renewable energy in total consumption is planned due to formation of new power generating capacities up to 2.500 megawatts in 2020.

By 2020 the share of renewable energy in total production in the country is planned to increase to 20 per cent from the current ten per cent. According to this indicator, by late 2011, 9.8 per cent fell to the share of hydropower, while the rest accounted for the other types of energy.

The strategy on the use and development of alternative and renewable energy sources in 2012-2020 will be approved in Azerbaijan by late 2012, its implementation is scheduled for 2013.

In late December 2011, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on development of six-month state strategy on the use of alternative and renewable energy sources in Azerbaijan in 2012-2020.

The slight delay in preparation of the strategy is due to establishment of a state company in Azerbaijan on the basis of the State Agency for Alternative and Renewable Energy.
