Kazakhstan to achieve renewable energy output goals despite COVID-19

There are currently no changes in the strategic documents of Kazakhstan regarding the development of renewable energy sources, Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy.

The ministry official said that according to Kazakhstan’s Concept for Transition to "Green Economy", the development renewable energy sources output is one of the key indicators of green energy.

Thus, the Concept and Strategy Kazakhstan – 2050 set goals to increase the share of alternative and renewable energy in the overall country's energy balance to 3 percent in 2020, to 30 percent in 2030, and to 50 percent in 2050.

“The country's plans for the development of RES because of COVID-19 pandemic have not changed and we are still aiming to achieve the set goals,” the ministry said.

The ministry added that according to the strategic and operational plans of the Ministry for 2020 the following measures will be taken in regards to the RES development:

- The electricity generated by renewable energy sources will amount to 3.15 billion kWh by the end of 2020;

- The auctions on renewable energy will be held thorough the year.

“The Ministry monitors operating renewable energy facilities on a quarterly basis. According to the results of the 1Q2020, electricity generation by renewable energy facilities amounted to about 548.4 million kWh. Electricity generation by renewable energy facilities increased by 58 percent in 1Q2020 compared to 1Q2019,” the ministry said.

The ministry representative said that according the production of electric energy by renewable energy facilities amounted to about 1,4 billion kWh in 1H2020.

“Electricity generation by renewable energy facilities increased by 55 percent in 1H2020 compared to 1H2019,” the ministry official said.
