By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The first 160-megawatt steam unit of the Ferdowsi Thermal Power Plant in the Razavi Khorasan Province (northeastern Iran) has been launched, said Hamid Sardari, deputy director of Thermal Power Plant Holding Company, Trend reports citing the company’s official website.

According to Sardari, the main purpose of the construction of cyclic combined units in Iran's Thermal Power Plants is to save fuel.

Sardari added that Ferdowsi TPP will have 3 steam units with each capacity of 160 megawatts and will generate a total of 480 megawatt hours of electricity.

"With the commissioning of these units, the electricity efficiency of the plant will increase by about 49 percent," he said.

According to the program, the second steam unit of the station will be launched in the next Iranian year (from March 21, 2021 to March 21, 2022).

The Ferdowsi Thermal Power Plant has 6 gas units with each capacity of 159 megawatts. The plant can generate a total of 954 megawatt hours of electricity.

At present, the total electricity generation of power plants in Iran, including thermal, water, alternative, small-scale, and nuclear power plants is 83,685 megawatts, where 81 percent of it is produced by TPPs.

Currently, the combined power cycle accounts for 41.7 percent of the production capacity of Iran's thermal power plants with 28,249 megawatts, the gas units account for 34.9 percent with 23,657 megawatts, and steam units account for 23.4 percent with 15,829 megawatts.
