The volume of loans issued by commercial banks in Georgia (excluding interbank loans) in March 2020 increased by 3.37 billion lari ($1.04 billion) or by 10.64 percent compared to the previous month and constituted 34.99 billion lari ($10.9 billion) by April 1, 2020, Trend reports via the National Bank of Georgia (NBG).

The volume of loans in national currency increased by 43.61 million lari ($13.5 million) or 0.30 percent, while the volume of loans in foreign currency increased by 3.32 billion lari ($1.03 billion) or by 19.26 percent in the same period (exchange rate effect excluded, increased by 1.18 percent).

By the end of March 2020, the total volume of national currency denominated loans to resident legal entities issued by commercial banks amounted to 4.54 billion lari ($1.4 billion), 0.20 percent more compared to the previous month), and foreign currency denominated loans constituted 12.51 billion lari ($3.8 billion).

During March 2020, the volume of lending to resident household sector increased by 7.30 percent or 1.15 billion lari ($358.2 million) compared to February 2020, and constituted 16.98 billion lari ($5.2 billion) by April 1, 2020.

Larization ratio for total loans constituted 41.22 percent by April 1, 2020, and decreased by 4.25 percentage point (exchange rate effect excluded, decreased by 0.21 percentage point), compared to March 1, 2020.

As of April 1, 2020, the banking sector in Georgia is represented by 15 commercial banks, including 14 foreign-controlled banks.

In March 2020, compared to the previous month, the total assets of Georgian commercial banks (in current prices) increased by 3.89 billion lari ($1.2 billion) or by 8.42 percent and constituted 50.13 billion lari ($15.5 billion).

The banking sector's equity capital equals 4.98 billion lari ($1.5 billion), which makes up 9.94 percent of the commercial banks total assets.
