Azerbaijan reveals data on 2020 portfolio investments

The total inflow of portfolio investments amounted to $287.1 million in 2020, and payments in this segment amounted to $568.9 million, Trend reports citing data of the balance of payments of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA).

Consequently, a negative balance of $281.8 million was formed in the balance of portfolio investments.

According to the CBA statements, during the reporting year, portfolio investment assets decreased mainly due to banks, and liabilities - due to the state and oil and gas sectors.

“The amount of investments attracted from abroad to Azerbaijan in the form of direct investments for four quarters of 2020 amounted to $4.5 billion, which demonstrates an increase of 5.9 percent compared to the same period in 2019. The oil and gas sector in the structure of direct investments in the Azerbaijani economy amounted to 86.6 percent,” the CBA said.

The current account deficit in Azerbaijan in 2020 amounted to $227.6 million, or 0.5 percent of GDP, while in 2019, a surplus of $4.4 billion was formed in the country's balance of payments.
