Turnover on payment cards in Azerbaijan spikes by late February 2021

The turnover on debit and credit cards through ATMs and POS terminals in Azerbaijan made up 2.6 billion manat ($1.5 billion) by late February 2021, which is 17.1 percent more compared to the same period of 2020, Trend reports citing the statistical bulletin of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA).

According to the bulletin, the total number of transactions with payment cards during the mentioned period reached 22.7 million, an increase of 41.7 percent for the year, including 2.54 million transactions worth 122 million manat ($71.7 million) outside the country.

Some 19.76 million transactions via debit cards worth 2.44 billion manat ($1.44 billion) were conducted both within the country and abroad, of which 7.45 million transactions worth over 1.7 billion manat ($1 billion) were carried out through ATMs inside the country, and through POS terminals – over 4.4 million transactions worth 248 million manat ($145.8 million), said the bulletin.

At the same time, bank customers carried out 2.95 million transactions on credit cards (both within the country and abroad) with a total value of 157 million manat ($92.3 million). Some 243,000 transactions worth 37 million manat ($21.7 million) were carried out using ATMs inside the country, and 1.49 million transactions worth 74 million manat ($43.5 million) - using POS terminals inside the country.

As of late February 2021, the number of payment cards increased by 22.3 percent compared to the same period in 2020, reaching 9.58 million, the bulletin added.
