Iran to add new locomotives, passenger wagons to its railway fleet

TEHRAN, Iran, July 23

Iran is expected to add some 2,000 new rail vehicles to its railway fleet, including locomotives and passenger wagons, said Iran's Minister of Road and Urban Development Mohammad Eslami, Trend reports via IRNA.

He said that all of the vehicles will be manufactured domestically in the current Iranian year (started March 20,2020).

"The government policy is to use domestic capacities, and the country would use all the capacities in the railway sector to reduce reliance on import," said Eslami.

"A total of 788 locomotives, freight and passenger wagons were produced domestically last Iranian year (started March 21, 2019)," he said.

"Iranian Rail Industries Development Co (IRICO) will participate in this project. IRICO uses knowledge-based companies and other industries, to cut down reliance on imports completely," he said.

"Iran Railway Company has signed a new contract with IRICO alongside other companies to renovate the old fleet," he said.

IRICO is one of the domestic production companies that designs and builds various passenger coaches, subway wagons, rail buses, various freight wagons.
