Summit of CIS Heads of State opens in Ashgabat

A meeting of the Council of CIS Heads of State has opened in Ashgabat, Trend reports referring to the CIS Executive Committee.
Documents aimed at developing economic cooperation, foreign policy partnership, ensuring security and countering new challenges and threats will be considered at the meeting. In particular, a draft Declaration on strategic economic cooperation of the CIS will be presented.
In addition, discussion will be held on the draft appeal to the peoples of the CIS countries and the world community in connection with the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, as well as regarding documents governing cooperation in the fight against corruption, terrorism and other violent manifestations of extremism.
The draft Convention on the Transfer of the Execution of Sentences Not Associated with Deprivation of Liberty has also been submitted to the heads of state for consideration.
Turkmenistan presides over the CIS this year. While referring to the status of permanent neutrality of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat decided to participate in the CIS structure as an associate member in 2005.
Turkmenistan withdrew from the agreement on a visa-free regime with the CIS countries in 1999.
