Presidents of Iran and Turkmenistan assess their talks as positive

(IRNA) - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Turkmen counterpart Saparmurat Niyazov assessed their talks as positive.

Speaking at the meeting where seven agreements were signed between the two sides, Ahmadinejad thanked the hospitality of his Turkmen counterpart and said that his talks with Niyazov were held in a brotherly atmosphere, reports Trend.

He expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of such talks which centered on various fields.

"We managed to reach favorable agreements in various fields including transport, electricity, joint investment and trade.

Besides, it was decided that Iran should purchase gas from Turkmenistan, details of which will be reported to the presidents of both countries once the issue is examined and approved by the joint economic commission," he added.

The Iranian president hoped that under the light of Iran's political will further expansion of mutual relations will be witnessed in future.

He expressed Turkmens as a good, hospitable, pure and original nation. Meanwhile, he invited President Niyazov for an official visit to Tehran.

For his part, the Turkmen president said that his talks with Ahmadinejad were fruitful, adding that the growing trend of close cooperation and ties between the two states will continue in the 21st century.

Niyazov declared the readiness of his country for broader collaboration with Iran.

Thanking President Ahmadinejad and his entourage, he said, "The Iranian and Turkmen peoples have always shared their joys and sorrows with each other and will continue to do so."

Ahmadinejad, heading a delegation, arrived in Ashkhabad on Monday on a two-day visit.

The president is accompanied by the Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, Minister of Energy Parviz Fattah, Commerce Minister Parviz Mir-Kazemi, Oil Minister Kazem Vaziri Hamaneh as well as Minister of Road and Transportation Mohammad Rahmati.

During Ahmadinejad's stay in Turkmenistan, the two sides signed seven documents and statements on expansion of bilateral cooperation.

Ahmadinejad wound up his official two-day visit to Turkmenistan and left for Tajikistan on the second leg of his two-nation tour.

The president and his accompanying delegation were seen off at Ashkhabad international airport by Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and Parliament Speaker Owezgeldi Atayev.
