Over 3.4M tons of cotton collected in Uzbekistan

More than 3.4 million metric tons of cotton were collected in Uzbekistan. Thus, the cotton growers over-fulfilled the contractual obligations on the raw cotton. About 90 percent of the total volume of collected cotton accounted for long staple cotton.
Uzbek President Islam Karimov congratulated the cotton growers on the fulfillment of the state order.
"On my own behalf and on behalf of people, I would like to express deep gratitude to the farmers who spared no effort and energy," the message says.
"Today, it is obvious that the work carried out to resolve the farmer movement's problems, which is the main guarantor and decisive force in achieving the success, enhancing its effectiveness and contribution to the development of agriculture, strengthening the role in the life of the village became a solid basis for gathering abundant harvest before rainy days," the message says.
The message said that 1.3 trillion UZS have been allocated in recent years for improving the ameliorative condition of lands in the country, as a result of which the condition of 1.75 million hectares of irrigated lands was improved.
Consequently, the cotton yield increased from 24 quintal to 26.5 quintal per hectare only in recent two years.
The country has taken measures to develop new cotton species, as a result of which over 100 new species were developed and 27 of them were included in the state register.
The gross income from the cotton production in Uzbekistan is expected to increase by 12 percent, or by over 400 billion UZS in 2014, compared to the previous season.
Farms got 200 billion UZS of additional profit in 2014 from the sale of high fiber raw cotton species.
"This will undoubtedly allow to increase the income of our farmers, villagers, to achieve our noble goals and milestones and further to develop the country as a whole," the message said.
Over 3.35 million metric tons of raw cotton was harvested in Uzbekistan in 2013 season.
The official exchange rate on Oct.25 is 2379.75 UZS/$1.
