$18 billion worth shares traded in Iran’s stock market

Some 73 billion shares, valued at over 22 trillion rials (around $18 billion) were traded in Iran's stock market during the past calendar year, which ended on March 19, Mehr news agency reported.

The value of traded shares was 3.85 percent more than the figure for the preceding year, the report said.

More than 1.8 million persons bought and sold the shares, showing a 114 percent rise compared to the previous year, the report added.

The capital market's value has reached some 1,260 trillion rials (around $103 billion), the director of the Securities and Exchange Organization announced on January 28.

"Taking the over-the-counter market into account, the figure stands at 1,560 trillion rials (some $127 billion)," Ali Saleh-Abadi said, IRNA news agency reported.

While the stock markets of the Middle East and North Africa region saw a very poor year in 2011, the Tehran Stock Exchange experienced an unprecedented growth of 30 percent, leading the financial markets of the region, a report by the Economist said.
