Iran has so far invested $50.5 million in several projects for developing phases 12-24 in the South Pars gas field, a senior Iranian official with oil ministry said.

Managing Director of Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) Ali Akbar Shabanpour has said that South Pars Gas field (shared with Qatar) provides 50 percent of the country's required gas, SHANA news agency said.

According to Ali Akbar Shabanpour Iran's production from South Pars Gas field is about 132 billion cubic meters of gas and the output of Qatar from its section of the field stands at 177 billion cubic meters.

According to the official, once five phases (currently being developed) of the gas field come on stream, Iran will be capable of producing gas from the filed on the same level as Qatar does.

Iran has plans to increase the raw gas production level from South Pars to 260 billion cubic meters per year in the next three years.

South Pars, located in the Persian Gulf, is divided into 24 development phases (28 standard phases).

It covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which are in Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf. The remaining 6,000 square kilometers are situated in Qatar's territorial waters.

The Islamic Republic has boosted the production capacity of raw gas from this field to 420 million cubic meters per day (mcm/d) by now.
