Weekly report on Iran's electricity sector

Iran's power plants generated over 185.104 TWh (terawatt-hours) of electricity since the beginning of the current Iranian fiscal year ‎‎(March 21) till Sept. 29, according to the latest weekly statistics, published by Iran's Energy Ministry.

The figure indicates a rise by 7 percent compared to the same period of the preceding year.

Iran’s electricity export has also increased by 24 percent up to ‎5.274 TWh‎ from the beginning of the current fiscal year to Sept. 29, ‎ according to the report.

Meanwhile, Iran imported 2.441 TWh of electricity during the period, registering no change compared to the same period of the preceding year.

Iran’s thermal power plants and Bushehr nuclear power plant produced 174.121 terawatt hours of electricity in total during the period, meanwhile hydroelectric power plants shared 10.983 TWh ‎ of the country's total electricity production.

The country increased gas and gas oil delivery to its power plants by 7.2 percent and 44.5 percent to 41.621 billion cubic meters and 1.407 billion liters, while fuel oil supply to this sector increased by 11.7 percent to 1.6 billion liters in the mentioned period.

The nominal electric generation capacity has increased by 825 megawatts (MW) to 77,253 MW in Iran since the beginning of the current Iranian fiscal year, according to the report.

Gas power plants (27,208 MW) share 35.22 percent of the generation capacity, meanwhile the share of combined cycle (19,630 MW) and steam power plants (15,829 MW) accounts for 25.41 and 20.49 percent, respectively.

Hydroelectric (11,811 MW) and Bushehr nuclear power plant’s (1020 MW) nominal electric generation capacity is equal to 15.29 and 1.32 percept of country’s electric generation capacity, meanwhile the share of renewables stands at only 0.42 percent or 322 MW.

Iran plans to increase its nominal electric generation capacity to 80,000 MW by summer 2018.
