Iranian official calls US sanctions on petrochemical industry a political show

Iran's Deputy Oil Minister have reacted to imposing the US sanctions on petrochemical sector calling it a political show that would have no effect on production and exports of the industry.

"The imposed sanctions on the petrochemical industry will have no effect on the production and exports, and we will further develop the industry," said Behzad Mohammadi, Trend reports citing SHANA.

"The issue of sanctions is not a new topic for the petrochemical industry. We have been dealing with this issue since 2013 and we maintain suitable production and sale volumes," he added.

The official noted that signing a memorandum of understanding between National Iranian Petrochemical Company and Iranian Mines & Mining Industries Development & Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) aims at developing petrochemical and steel sectors in the country.

"In total, 14 new plants will be opened in Parsian Energy Intensive Industries Special Economic Zone, which will produce 15 million tons of petrochemical products, and $20 billion will be invested in the project," he noted.

In his words, the construction of the hub in this zone will create jobs for at least 15,000 workforce.

"Commissioning of three petrochemical plants including Kaveh Methanol Complex, Bushehr Methanol Plant and Olefin plant at Ilam petrochemical complex will allow to increase the capacity of Iran petrochemical industry to five million tons. By 2020, 15 other petrochemical plans will be launched in the country," he indicated.
