Algerian army forces have killed three terrorists and arrested another in an ambush at the borders with Niger, local El Khabar newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The newspaper quoted a security source as saying that the operation occurred last Monday, after the explosion of a road bomb targeting a patrol of Niger army, seriously wounding two soldiers and blowing up a military engine, in Samafo on the borders with Algeria, Xinhua reported.

The Algerian army forces have managed tracking down the terrorists who were about to plough road bombs on the border line.

The source mentioned that joint security forces of border guards and army special forces conducted the operation, which occurred near Oued Tafssit on the desert border between Algeria and Niger.

The source said the terrorists tend to set up bombs on the border in order to securing the smuggling operations and perpetuating terror acts there.

The security forces have seized two ground-mines, a hand made bomb, machine guns and a load of ammunition.

The source said the success of the aforementioned operation highlights the efficiency of military cooperation between Algerian and Niger army units on the border, in the frame of Algiers Convention on Counterterrorism in the Sahel and the Sahara, which has been signed on 2010 between army chiefs of staff of Algeria, Mali, Mauritania and Niger.

The operation comes a week after the meeting of foreign ministers of Algeria, Mali, Mauritania and Niger in Bamako, where they agreed on boosting coordination in counterterrorism in the region.
