Former Lebanese President Amin Gemayel said the Syrian government is interested in destabilizing the situation in Lebanon, the Anadolu news agency reported on Monday.

Gemayel said the administration of President Bashar al-Assad is doing everything possible to ensure that the world's attention has moved from Syria to neighboring countries.

"The Syrian regime, as in the past, continues to terrorize its people," Gemayel said.

Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for over 17 months.

According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria is nearing 20,000 people. More than 230,000 people become refugees with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
